Our editorial team analysed over 100 independent sources for this ranking including long-form expert reviews, verified owner reports, technical specifications, and, where available, independent laboratory tests. Each of the 10 options was scored individually on 8 criteria. None of the ranked companies can influence or pay to change any score.
Buyer's guide
Sports and fitness equipment is frequently sold on aspirational marketing rather than real-world performance data. Look for products evaluated by people who match your own fitness level and use case, rather than elite users whose demands differ from most buyers.
The default weights in this ranking reflect common buyer priorities for the Sports category. If a specific criterion matters more to you—or not at all—use the weight sliders at the top of this page to recalculate the ranking to match your own requirements. The underlying scores do not change; only how they are combined.

“I'm on a weightloss journey, and I recently got below 500 pounds, which is the listed max weight of the concept2 rower, so I'm thinking about getting one for exercise in the winter when I can't swim. It's interesting how it's pretty much the highest listed max weight for any piece of cardio equipment you can buy, most of even the heavy duty ones max out at 400 pounds.”
“Concept 2 is an absolute classic and will always be the baseline for rowing machines.”
“What I noticed about the Concept 2 is that it looks like everything can be taken apart and replaced. And from what it looks like online, you can buy those replacement parts. There are very little things you can buy these days like that. I haven’t had mine for long, but so far I am not regretting it.”
“I got a Concept 2 Model C rower back in 1994. Since I got my rower 28 years ago I purchased the newer style draw bar with a slight bend that comes with the Model D forward and added the thin cushion for the seat. YMMV but that thin cushion makes big difference to how long I can comfortably go longer distances. But to echo his comments, it is a bulletproof machine that just keeps going and going.”
