Best Moving Truck Rental Companies

💬 What real owners actually say

Synthesized from 2026 owner reviews & discussions across social media — the things spec sheets leave out.

• Penske is the reliability favorite for long moves. Owners repeatedly pick it for cross-country hauls — cleaner, better-maintained trucks, and sometimes hundreds cheaper than U-Haul on a one-way. A common strategy: Penske for the distance, U-Haul for local.
• U-Haul is cheap and everywhere — but condition varies wildly. It’s the default for local moves, yet complaints about dirty, beat-up trucks are common (even a company rep concedes a “lazy dealer” can send a bad one out). Inspect the truck before you drive off.
• Budget draws the harshest warnings. Multiple owners report last-minute cancellations (one a day before a state-to-state move) and call it a company to “stay far away” from — have a backup plan if you book it.
• Reserve early and confirm the day before. The recurring nightmare is a reservation that evaporates right before moving day. Call to confirm the exact truck and location — don’t just trust the online booking.
• Right-size the truck, and mind the license. A retired mover prefers low-to-the-ground 26-ft U-Hauls for easier loading; note too that very large trucks (and air brakes) can carry licensing requirements. A too-small truck means a second trip.
