Continuous glucose monitors have crossed into the mainstream following the FDA approval of OTC devices (Dexcom Stelo, Abbott Lingo) in 2024 making CGM accessible without a prescription for the first time. This creates two distinct audiences: people with diabetes managing blood glucose medically, and metabolically healthy individuals using glucose data for performance and nutrition insights. We evaluated 8 devices across sensor accuracy, wear time, calibration requirements, alert systems, app quality, integration, and cost for both audiences.

Medical disclaimer: CGMs are medical devices. Most require a prescription for people with diabetes. Always consult a healthcare provider before starting CGM use for diabetes management. OTC CGMs (Stelo, Lingo) are intended for adults without diabetes; they are not indicated for insulin dosing decisions.
