I Followed the Vacuum Ranking to the Letter. My Cat-Hair Problem Is Finally Solved.

Two long-haired cats and dark hardwood floors is a combination that has defeated roughly a decade of vacuums for me. They all “sort of” worked — picked up the obvious stuff, left a fine gray haze of undercoat that I’d only see when the light hit the floor at the wrong angle.

I finally stopped guessing and just followed RealRankly’s vacuum ranking, specifically its top pick for pet hair. What made me trust it was that the ranking scored “fine-particle and pet-hair pickup on hard floors” as a separate line item, rather than lumping everything into one “cleaning power” number. That’s the exact scenario that had beaten every previous vacuum I owned.

It works. The haze is gone. I ran it over a stretch I’d just done with my old vacuum and the canister still filled — which was equal parts satisfying and horrifying.

The ranking also didn’t oversell. It noted the pick was louder than average and had a smaller bin, and both are true. But it argued those were fair trades for the suction, and for my specific problem they absolutely were. I’d rather empty a bin more often than keep seeing cat hair in the afternoon sun.

Ten years of mediocre vacuums, and the fix was reading which sub-score actually matched my floors. The ranking had it broken out and waiting.
