I signed up for a telehealth service months ago because RealRankly ranked it #1, then promptly forgot about it the way you forget about insurance. It became relevant at 2 a.m. on a Tuesday, when my three-year-old spiked a fever and I was doing the math on whether an ER trip was overreacting.

I was talking to an actual clinician in under six minutes. That number — median time to reach a real provider, not a chatbot — was the ranking’s single highest-weighted criterion, and at 2 a.m. it was the only criterion that existed.

Months earlier, reading the list, I’ll admit I thought that metric was a little nerdy. Who’s timing this to the minute? The answer, it turns out, is a scared parent at 2 a.m. who needs to know whether to wake the whole house and drive to the hospital. The clinician walked me through it, told me what to watch for, and told me it could wait until morning. It could.

What I trust in hindsight is that the ranking optimized for the moment you’d actually use the product — the emergency — not the marketing-friendly stuff like how many “wellness features” the app has. It scored the thing that mattered when it mattered most.

I’ve since told every parent I know. Not the app, specifically — the ranking, and the reason it picked what it picked. When a criterion you doubted turns out to be the one that saves your night, you become a believer.
