Check one: HVAC compatibility, specifically the C-wire question. A meaningful share of returns happen because the thermostat needs a common wire the house doesn’t have. Our ranking flags which picks include a workaround adapter and which will leave you fishing wires or calling an electrician. Read this before you fall in love with a model.

Check two: whether the “learning” actually saves energy or just automates comfort. Some models quietly keep your house at a cushy temperature and call it smart. We look for verifiable scheduling and genuine setback behavior when you’re away, because that’s where the savings live.

Check three: what happens when the internet goes down or the company changes its app. A thermostat is infrastructure; it should still heat your house as a plain thermostat when the cloud has a bad day. We weight local and offline function because you’ll own this longer than any given app version.
