I Moved My Savings to the #1 Robo-Advisor a Year Ago. Here's the Boring, Happy Update.

This is the least dramatic finance story you’ll read today, and that’s the point. A year ago I finally moved my sad, idle savings into the robo-advisor RealRankly ranked #1. I’d been putting it off for years because every option felt like a trap with a hidden fee.

The reason I trusted this ranking over the ten others I’d skimmed: its top-weighted criterion was total cost transparency — not headline returns, which nobody can promise, but whether the fees were honest and legible. That’s the one thing a normal person can actually evaluate, and it’s the one thing most “best robo-advisor” lists bury.

Twelve months in: the fees were exactly what the ranking said. The rebalancing happened without me touching anything. I don’t check the app daily because there’s nothing to check — which, for someone who used to let money rot in a checking account out of decision paralysis, is a small miracle.

I want to be careful here, and so was the ranking: it didn’t promise me a number. Markets do what they do. What it promised was that this platform wouldn’t nickel-and-dime me or hide the ball, and on that — the part that’s actually a product decision rather than a market bet — it was completely accurate.

A year of no surprises is the best review I can give a place that holds my money. The ranking pointed me somewhere trustworthy and got out of the way.
