I work from home above a bar. Most days that means bass from 11am through midnight. I needed headphones that actually worked, not headphones that tested well in an anechoic chamber.
So I ran our own version of the test: I bought the Sony WH-1000XM5, the Bose QuietComfort Ultra, and the Apple AirPods Max simultaneously, used each as my primary pair for one week, then made the call.

The result: the Sony is the right answer for my situation. The Bose might be right for yours.
Here is the breakdown that the numbered rankings cannot fully capture:
Sony WH-1000XM5 (#1 on our list)
Best pure ANC on the market for the price. The bar downstairs disappears. Traffic disappears. What the rankings cannot tell you: the companion app is poor software that you will stop using within a week. The headphones themselves, however, are exceptional.
Bose QuietComfort Ultra (#2)
The ANC is slightly less aggressive than Sony’s, but the fit over a 6+ hour session is noticeably more comfortable. If you are on calls all day, this is genuinely worth considering over the #1 pick. Comfort is underrated in most headphone reviews.
Apple AirPods Max (#4)
The transparency mode is the best in any headphone we have tested — the outside world sounds more natural than through any other pair. The ANC is strong but not Sony-strong. At their price point, you are partly paying for the Apple ecosystem integration, which is real and valuable if you are all-Apple.
Our scoring methodology weights ANC effectiveness, comfort, sound quality, and value. That is why Sony holds #1 and Bose holds #2. Your actual decision might reasonably come out differently depending on how long you wear them each day.
The ranking tells you what is best by the numbers. This article tells you which number to pay attention to for your life.
