It also reflects one dimension where Ring scores lower than our top two picks: their law enforcement data policy.

We think buyers should understand this before purchasing, so here is what is actually on record.

What changed, and why it matters: Between 2018 and 2022, Ring provided footage to law enforcement over 11,000 times under an “emergency” disclosure provision — frequently without a warrant. Following public scrutiny and Congressional attention, Amazon/Ring tightened their policies in 2023. Law enforcement now generally requires a warrant or customer consent for footage requests.

What this means practically: Ring cameras send footage to Amazon’s cloud. You do not have local-only storage as a default option. Your footage lives on servers that are subject to US law and Amazon’s policies, which can evolve.

Why Ring is still #3: For the vast majority of buyers — people who want to know when packages arrive and see who is at the door — the security benefit is real and the privacy trade-off is acceptable. Ring’s hardware quality and user experience are genuinely strong.
