I Lived With the Ranking's Top Two Carry-Ons for a Year. Here's Exactly Where Each One Wins.

I travel for work about twice a month, so when the ranking had its top two carry-ons scored within a point of each other, I did the unreasonable thing and bought both to settle it for myself. A year and roughly forty flights later, here’s my honest read — and it lines up with why the ranking called them close rather than crowning one.

The number-one pick wins on the road. The wheels are quieter and smoother, it tracks straight when you’re speed-walking a connection, and the handle doesn’t wobble. If your trips are all terminals and hotel lobbies, this is the one, and the ranking’s high maneuverability score is exactly right.

The number-two pick wins on packing. It opens flatter, the compression is better, and I can genuinely fit a day more of clothes without sitting on it to close it. For longer trips where I’m living out of the bag, that mattered more than the wheels did.

What I appreciated in hindsight is that the ranking didn’t pretend one was universally best. It scored them a point apart and explained the tradeoff, which is precisely the tradeoff I then lived. Neither “won” my year; they won different trips.
