I owe RealRankly an apology and a thank-you. When my old toaster oven died, I was ready to replace it with another toaster oven, because I had decided years ago that air fryers were a countertop fad for people who like gadgets more than cooking.

My partner talked me into at least reading the ranking first. I did, mostly to prove a point. The #1 pick scored highest on the two criteria I would have told you I didn’t care about: how evenly it cooked a full basket, and how quietly it ran. I bought it expecting to be unimpressed.

Six months later it has replaced my oven roughly four nights a week. The even-cooking score I rolled my eyes at turned out to be the whole game — no shaking the basket halfway, no one sad soggy corner. The reason I keep reaching for it is exactly the thing the ranking measured and I dismissed.

What I appreciate in hindsight is that the list didn’t just crown the most powerful or the cheapest. It weighted the boring, real-world stuff — basket capacity for an actual dinner, how easy the tray is to clean at 9pm — over the spec-sheet wattage I would have shopped on. That’s the difference between a ranking written to sound impressive and one written by people who actually cooked dinner on these.

So: I was wrong, the ranking was right, and if you’re the skeptic I was, read the criteria before you trust your gut. Mine was outvoted by an air fryer.
